PROJECT WEBSITE

The project "From the Map to the Territory" aims to give visibility and voice to the projects, groups and independent spaces of Castilla y León, starting from the premise that these initiatives –normally run by artists and cultural activists– are essential in order to understand the web of artistic and cultural production of any territory.

Independent initiatives, which may also be called alternative or self-run, are characterised by their organisational heterogeneity, by the diversity of their aesthetic vision and for working very closely with social movements. Their link to association movements is, in fact, undeniable due to their collective approach and will for social transformation. It is for this reason that in this project, the socio-political context in which the said initiatives have surged forth is very present.

Analysing the emergence of these spaces and groups, we intend to introduce the evolution of a sector that is apparently invisible, but whose participation and implication in the socio-cultural development is key in the evaluation and analysis of the role of contemporary art in the Community. As such, to identify and to gather documentation (graphic, audiovisual, sound, etc.) about these initiatives which may be active or may be part of the past of the región, but have had an essential role in the last 30 years that this project covers.

Starting from a work methodology that is integrative and participative, this project will pay special attention to the activation of related processes and cooperatives between active independent cultural agents, without disregarding the interest in achieving results that respond to current needs of such ignored independent cultural sector from Castilla y León.
