6 June - 31 August 2014

Curator: Cecilia Widenheim

The exhibition presents Tora Vega Holmström (1880-1967) and her international network.
2014 is the centennial of the Baltic Exhibition that took place in Malmö 1914. A total of 850 000 people visited the exhibition, an exhibition that came to change Malmö on a number of different levels. The art exhibition included in the Baltic exhibition is still one of the greatest manifestations of contemporary art carried out in our latitudes. The exhibition includes over 3500 works by artists active in Russia, Germany , Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

One of the artists that visitors could get acquainted with was Tora Vega Holmström, a Skåne born painter who had studied in Copenhagen, in Gothenburg and in Germany. Tora Vega Holmström belonged to the ultra-modern wing at the Baltic Exhibition in 1914, which also included artists such as Isaac Grünewald and Sigrid Hjertén, German expressionists and Russians such as Petrov-Vodkin and Kandinsky. Tora Vega Holmström displayed a dozen works, including the famous painting Strangers.

Early in her life Tora Vega Holmström developed a great interest in international art trends and went on study trips to Germany and France. Later she also visited North Africa. She has been described as a "Scanian European". The exhibition will include works from Moderna Museet's collection and loans from Malmö Art Museum and other institutions as well as private collectors.
