PABLO PICASSO
From Arcadian Bliss to Painted Exorcism
6 June - 24 August 2014

Curator: Joa Ljungberg

For the first time in Malmö, one of modernism's most famous artists - Pablo Picasso ( 1881-1973 ) is displayed at Moderna Museet Malmö. In The Upper Galleries a unique selection of his extensive oeuvre will be presented.
In addition to works from the Moderna Museet's own collection, loans from Picasso's family and private collectors will be shown. The magnificent works Baigneuses au ballon (1928) and Deux personnages (1939), donated to the museum in accordance with Elisabeth "Peggy" Bonnier's will will of course be here.

The title, From Arcadian Bliss to Painted Exorcism, reflects the fact that Picasso himself spoke of some of his paintings as "exorcism paintings", but it also refers to the Arcadian landscape of the paintings like The Source (La source, 1921). What does the Arcadian landscapes stand for and what did Picasso mean when he connected his artistic creation with exorcism? These issues raise a more general discussion of the importance of Picasso's different styles and modes of expression, not least the development of Cubism as an artistic language and the collage as built up of characters and fragments of "reality".
