SARAH AND JOSEPH BELKNAP
11 October 2014 – 24 February 2015

Curator: Karsten Lund

Sarah and Joseph Belknap, long-time collaborators, move freely between sculpture, photography, video, and performance in their highly inquisitive artistic practice. Reflecting on our place in the cosmos, their work draws inspiration from the history of science, popular imagination, and their shared sense of wonder. For their exhibition at the MCA, the Belknaps look both to the skies overhead and the ground beneath our feet to find their subjects, whether they are modeling the cratered surface of the moon or distant exoplanets in a set of new sculptures or comparing the two largest impact craters on the moon and the earth in other recent works. On a deeper level, their practice is driven by a restlessly experimental process and an approach to sculpture that centers on the use of unusual materials such as silicon rubber and simulated lunar regolith—a synthetic approximation of moon dust, more commonly used by scientific researchers.

BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works: Sarah and Joseph Belknap is curated by Karsten Lund, Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
