ALEXANDRE DA CUNHA
Real
7 April — 23 May 2015

Galeria Luisa Strina is delighted to announce Real, the fourth solo exhibition by artist Alexandre da Cunha.
Alexandre da Cunha presents a new series of wall-based works and concrete sculptures made with casts of used tyres. Continuing his research with everyday materials, the artist exhibits large scale wall-based works and metal cast sculptures, a new aspect of his work.
Through the use of found objects, juxtaposed by their formal affinities, wall reliefs (Comédia, 2015) reference to art history icons such as Picasso’s Bull’s Head, 1942. In a similar way, cleaning mops are tensioned with strings creating circular compositions (Mandala, 2015). The objects used suffer little alteration, but the combination among them create a new language where the viewer’s perception is invited to see them in another way.
His work is part of the following collections: Tate Modern, London, UK; Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Centro de Arte Contemporânea Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil; CIFO Cisneros Collection, Miami, USA; Zabludowicz Collection, London, UK; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.
Recent solo shows include: Le Grand Café, Centre d’art Contemporain, Saint Nazaire, France (2012); Full Catastrophe, Thomas Dane Gallery, London, UK (2012); Kentucky Pied de Poule, CRG Gallery, New York, USA (2012); Laissez Faire, Camden Arts Centre, London, UK (2009).
