MUR BRUT 02:
STEPHAN MACHAC
Black Sun
7 September – 31 December 2014

“Today, it is difficult to be more indifferent to their reality than the facts themselves, more indifferent to their meaning than images.” (Jean Baudrillard, Radical Thought)
For the MUR BRUT project series, artist Stephan Machac has developed “BLACK SUN”, a continuous, essayistic montage process. With four images on the wall at a time, Machac creates an ever-shifting viewpoint that changes as the images are replaced.
The pictorial essay explores ideas inspired by Artavazd Peleshyan’s theory of the distance montage. The principle of distance montage connects images and episodes across a distance in time, rejecting the traditional, linear montage sequence and giving the film’s structure a circular, rotating configuration.
On opening night, films by Peleshyan will be shown in the Salon des Amateurs to complement Machac’s work.

Machac studied media art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and ZKM from 2003 to 2007, and Visual Cultural Studies at the Berlin University of Arts from 2007, graduating in 2010 from Professor Katharina Sieverding’s master class.

The exhibition is open 24 hours a day.

The set changes on a weekly basis.
