Erik Steinbrecher was born in Basel in 1963 and lives in Berlin. Steinbrecher is known to a wide international audience particularly since his participation in documenta X (1997) as well as further major institutional presentations such as at Kunst-Werke Berlin in 2000, MoMA PS1, New York, in 2001, the Kunsthalle Vienna in 2004, the Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich in 2005, the Villa Merkel, Galerie der Stadt Esslingen am Neckar in 2006, or at the Kunstbibliothek – Berlin State Museums in 2012. In early 2014 the ETH Zurich’s Graphic Collection will open a retrospective of Erik Steinbrecher’s printed works. With wit, irony and a penetrating critical eye he will create a new body of work for the Kunsthaus Baselland and – in a form of spatial investigation – enable an unusual insight into his creative process.
